No. 343.
Sir Edward Thornton to Mr. Evarts.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of yesterday’s date respecting the expediency of so modifying the rules regulating the importation of cattle into Canada as to permit short-horned cattle raised west of the Alleghany Mountains to enter the Dominion of Canada unobstructed, for breeding purposes.

I am forwarding a copy of your note to the governor-general of the Dominion, with a request that the attention of the Canadian Government may be invited to this important subject, and I shall also transmit a copy of it to Earl Granville.

I have, &c.,

EDW’D THORNTON.
