No. 459.
Mr. Brown to Mr. Fish.

No. 31.]

Sir: I have the honor to inclose herewith copy and translation of the note addressed to me by his excellency Server Pacha, minister of foreign affairs, in answer to mine of the 20th ultimo, conveying to the Ottoman government the regrets of the President on the occasion of the death of His Highness Aali Pacha, the late Grand Vizier.

I remain, &c.,

JOHN P. BROWN.

Server Pacha to Mr. Brown.

[Inclosure.—Translation.]

Sir: I have received the note which you were so good as to write to me the 25th October, containing the expression of the regrets of the President of the United States on the occasion of the regrettable death of His Highness Aali Pacha.

The Sublime Porte has been very sensibly affected by the both noble and sincere sentiments expressed by the President.

I beg you, sir, to convey our very lively thanks to the President, and to assure him that the new cabinet of His Imperial Majesty the Sultan can have nothing more at heart than to cultivate more and more the relations of friendship so happily existing between the two countries.

Accept, sir, the assurance of my perfect consideration.
