No. 441.
Mr. Andrews to Mr. Fish.

No. 158]

Sir: I take pleasure in being able to inform you that during the past three months there has been in Sweden an almost general increase of the wages of mechanics 25 per cent.

This is owing, aside from the prevailing prosperity, partly to the organizations which workingmen have effected and partly to the influence of emigration, which is going on with marked activity. It is considered by those who have investigated the matter that the cost of living here has increased 50 per cent, in the past fifteen or twenty years.

I have. &c.

C. C. ANDREWS.
