Mr. Biddle to Mr. Fish.
San Salvadory, June 20, 1872. (Received July 18.)
Sir: I have the honor to report the return of President Gonzalez, with his army, to this capital, on the 16th instant, after a victorious campaign in Honduras, President Medina having fled before the advance of the Salvadorean troops, and is now supposed to be a fugitive in Omoa, on the Atlantic.
Garrisons of the army of this republic are retained in the Honduranean cities of Gratias, Tegucigalpa, and Comayagua, in the latter of which the provisional President, Arias, has established his headquarters.
Permanent peace is, therefore, confidently expected, but as a precaution, Field-Marshal Gonzalez has not yet resumed the presidency, but remains in actual command of the army until affairs are more settled.
Referring to my No. 46, at the request of the minister of foreign affairs I have delivered to the acting President the congratulatory reply of the President of the United States upon the re-election of the present administration in Salvador.
