Mr. Sanford to Mr. Seward
Sir: The Moniteur of to-day contains a report to the King by the minister of finance, accompanying the annual statement of the trade and navigation of Belgium for the year 1864. It shows increase of trade as compared with previous years. The general commerce (of importations and exportations) amounted to nearly $500,000,000, being an increase of 18 per cent. upon 1863, and 24 per cent. upon 1862.
The importations from and exportations to the United States have increased 10 per cent. upon 1863.
The exportations to Mexico, it will be observed, continue to augment in notable proportion, being 356 per cent. increase upon 1863.
The statement gives evidence of the steady increase of wealth and prosperity of the country.
I have the honor to be, with great respect, your most obedient servant,
Hon. William H. Seward, Secretary of State, &c., &c., &c.
