Mr. Sanford to Mr. Seward
Sir: Mourning has been brought to many families here by the news from Mexico of the destruction of a detachment of the Belgian legion in a combat at Tamcaburo, in the State of Michoacan, on the 11th of April. It is stated in the published reports that the whole detachment of about 300 men were either killed, wounded, or taken prisoners. Among the killed is a son of the minister of war, General de Chazal, who was a captain, and seven other officers.* *
I have the honor to be, with great respect, your most obedient servant,
Hon. William H. Seward, Secretary of State, &c., &c., &c.
