Mr. Bigelow to Mr. Seward
Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 300, in reply to my note of the 19th of October last, relating to Mexican affairs, and have given it very careful consideration. Yesterday I waited upon the minister of foreign affairs, and after disposing of some other matters, said to him that I had received no encouragement to continue the conversation which had occupied so large a portion of our interview on the 17th ultimo. I then added that I did not know that I had occasion to say anything more. His excellency asked if I had received any communication upon the subject. I said I had, and that the President did not at present see any prospect of the two governments being able to come to an understanding upon the basis discussed in our conversation.
