253. Editorial Note

On December 3–4, the U.N. Security Council met to consider the admission of new members to the United Nations. It denied the Soviet Union’s request to include the application of the Mongolian People’s Republic on its agenda, but decided to consider the application of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

By a vote of 8 in favor, 2 against, and 1 abstention, the Security Council decided to recommend to the U.N. General Assembly that Mauritania be admitted to the United Nations. The United States voted in favor of this measure. The Soviet Union, however, voted against it, and it was not adopted. The Security Council then decided to submit a special report on these proceedings to the General Assembly.
