4489. I mentioned to Eden last evening Churchill’s message to Sharett (Deptel 5344 to London)2 and discussed possibility of my sending similar message. Eden unaware UK Embassy instructed to tell us about Churchill’s message. He said that since Churchill considered pro-Zionist a message from him had seemed desirable but doubted desirability of supporting message from US.
In view of above and fact that further message from me might be construed as resulting from my visit London rather than from our own initiative do not believe we should send any message at this time.
