No. 340

Editorial Note

The Prime Minister of Norway, Einar Gerhardsen, paid his first visit to the United States in May 1951. It was an informal, unofficial visit in which he visited several Norwegian-American communities around the country, going as far west as Seattle. He had expressed a desire to meet some American labor leaders and was the guest of John L. Lewis at a small private luncheon in Washington on May 26.

On Monday, May 28, the Prime Minister and Mrs. Gerhardsen had lunch with the President. That same afternoon Gerhardsen and the Norwegian Ambassador to the United States met with the Secretary of State. A memorandum of their conversation and other information on Gerhardsen’s trip is in Secretary’s Memoranda, lot 53D444.
