494. Deptel 283, June 1[11]. Vergara (on way trip to Bio de Janeiro) informed Dunn today he saw no objection to reaffirmation Chilean interest in treaty of friendship, commerce and navigation. Since Bernstein already in Bio, Vergara said he would discuss matter with Abelardo Silva, chief FonOff commercial policy section, re inserting [Page 552] reaffirming clause in text of forthcoming note renewing Chile–US modus vivendi. Vergara suggested preparing and exchanging notes extending modus vivendi now without waiting for actual expiration date and said would suggest this procedure to Silva. Embassy requests authorization follow matter up with Silva with view to effecting exchange of notes within next week or two.
