The Ambassador in Chile (Bowers) to the Secretary of State
A–57. On two occasions during 1947 Chilean officials have indicated some misunderstandng concerning pending United States–Chile Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation. Economic Counselor Dunn mentioned this on Feb 5 to FornOff Acting Under-Secretary, Sr. Bernstein, who stated that perhaps some Chilean officials considered this Treaty unimportant in view of current multilateral negotiations. He also said FornOff Commercial Policy Section very much disorganized lately and that very few in Section knew very much about Treaty. He said he would see that erroneous impression is cleared up and that study of proposed Treaty is resumed.
