A–78. El Diario Ilustrado of February 21 published interview with Minister of Economy and Commerce Bossay who was reported as saying that recent decision of the Eximbank to grant new loan of 5,300,000 to Fomento Corporation53 was of great significance as regards future economic support for Chile’s production. He stated this loan was proof of the favorable attitude existing in the United States relative to strengthening of economic relations between the two countries and willingness of the United States to collaborate in Chilean plans for increased production.

Bossay said loan would be used to acquire machinery for agriculture and for electric power plants. He referred to the “magnificent conditions” of the loan which bears 3.5 per cent interest and is payable in ten years as compared to previous loan at 4 per cent interest payable in five years. Bossay said this was proof of the excellent and favorable atmosphere in which Chile’s relations with the United States are developing. Embassy assumes Bossay referring to Eximbank loan approved Oct., 1946.54
