The Ambassador in China (Stuart) to the Secretary of State

747. Following is Tientsin’s 57, April 5 to Embassy:

“Following press release issued by Marine Headquarters this morning:

‘Tientsin, China. At 0115 on the morning of the 5th a dissident force of unknown numbers attacked the First Marine Division ammunition supply point near Tangku. By 0530 this force was being pursued northward by Marine forces. Five Marines were killed and 16 wounded in fighting off the attack. [Page 955] Names of those killed and wounded are withheld pending the notification to the next kin.’

Further developments will be reported.

Sent to Nanking, repeated to Peiping.”
