Colonel Marshall S. Carter to General Marshall
[Washington,] 3 January 1947.
88932. This afternoon as a matter of coordination I showed Mr. Truman the message I sent you today from Mr. Byrnes.72
[Page 681]Mr. Truman suggested that I advise you in the utmost secrecy that he hoped you could be back by 10 January. Mr. Truman’s concern is connected with the last two words of Mr. Byrnes’ message, and the project that the President has previously discussed with you.
