The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in China (Gauss)

105. Radio Chungking has recently quoted a number of reports in the Chinese press in regard to the “growing movement” among Chinese students for enlistment in the Chinese Armed Forces.28 One report referred to 20,000 students having enlisted in recent weeks. In another the opinion was expressed that “the infusion into the army of students will not only strengthen the Chinese Armed Forces but will have a beneficial influence on the internal situation of the country as well”.
