61. I called on Generalissimo this morning by appointment, accompanied by Atcheson,28 delivered message and found occasion to make comments suggested (25, January 5, 5 p.m.). Kung was present, acted as interpreter and translated message to Chiang. While Kung made some deprecatory remarks to Generalissimo in regard to the Treasury recommendations, they both received the message affably [Page 834] and the Generalissimo thanked me for delivering it and indicated that after study of it he would wish to make reply.
