695. Message from Mr. Wallace to Mme. Chiang has been delivered (your 521, April 18). Please inform Mr. Wallace that I shall be delighted to have him as my guest for first evening and shall follow his wishes that evening not become a social event but be spent with staff only.
When place of Mr. Wallace’s first arrival in China becomes known Government will probably as usual send representative, likely Hollington Tong,26 to join him there. I shall at same time send officer or Attaché of Embassy. I assume Department will inform Mr. Wallace in outline of present conditions in China before his departure.
