President Roosevelt to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek 20

The cordial felicitations and good wishes which you extended on behalf of the Chinese nation to the people and Government of the United States are very warmly appreciated.21

I am happy to know that Vice President Wallace’s visit has been a source of encouragement to the Chinese people. We on our part are finding Dr. Kung’s presence in this country most helpful. Such visits, I feel, contribute materially to strengthening mutual understanding between the two nations.

The American people regard with deepest sympathy and admiration China’s gallant determination in meeting the vicious assaults of the now desperate foe. We view with deep satisfaction the recent Allied successes which give to the hard-pressed Chinese armies and people the knowledge that complete victory and peace with justice are now substantially nearer. That knowledge will inspire all of the United Nations to redoubled efforts in the realization that success in whatever theater will hasten attainment of the common goal.
