1044. Have learned from press that Eric Johnston43 is planning to come to Russia middle of May. Would appreciate advice on the details of the purposes of his trip and the Department’s views. I welcome his trip and believe his objective should be to obtain information [Page 956] and create goodwill. I hope Mr. Johnston will be asked to discuss postwar trade matters only in the most general way and after consultation with me.
