My Dear Archbishop: I refer to your memorandum of June 12 and your letter of June 17, 1944,52 in which, in connection with the military operations of the Allied forces in Italy, you express the concern of the Holy See for the safety of the Italian capital and request that this matter be brought to the attention of the competent authorities with a view to ensuring the protecion of Rome.

I am glad to inform you that your communications, which have received the Department’s most careful attention, have been duly transmitted to the competent authorities for their consideration and such action as may be deemed appropriate.

I shall communicate with you again on this subject at the earliest possible date.
