The Department of State to the Argentine Embassy

Memorandum

Reference is made to discussions held with members of the Argentine Embassy concerning the importation of fruits from Argentina. Arrangements are being made to facilitate the importation of a small initial shipment of fruits.

At this time the Department would like to call to the attention of the Argentine Embassy the difficulties in connection with the movement of newsprint from United States ports to Argentina. In order to maintain even minimum requirements of newsprint in Argentina and to relieve to some extent the burden which has fallen on ships controlled by the United States, it would be appreciated if the Argentine Government would give sympathetic consideration to [Page 404] moving at least 2,500 or 3,000 tons of newsprint monthly to Argentina from the United States on vessels of the Argentine State Merchant Marine.
