The Consul General at Algiers (Wiley) to the Secretary of State

1169. From Murphy. My 1151, June 24.73 At its meeting yesterday the Committee of National Liberation accepted Governor General Boisson’s resignation but asked that he remain in office until his successor could be named. I understand the Committee is endeavoring to find an acceptable replacement and plans to discuss the matter with us.

I shall telegraph further tomorrow after consultation with Giraud and Massigli. [Murphy.]

  1. Not printed; in this telegram Mr. Murphy reported that Giraud’s headquarters had informed him that Boisson had tendered his resignation on the grounds that he could not work with the Committee of National Liberation as it was then constituted. No official action had yet been taken on the resignation. (851.01/2338)
