4200. “For Harriman28 from Stettinius.29 Russians and Chinese here very concerned regarding recent publicity on new land route to China. U.P. dispatch July 8 from London describes route and names towns. Disclosure attributed to American lend-lease official recently returned from Middle East. We would appreciate your investigating this matter as we have considered it of utmost secrecy due to Soviet relations with Japan.”
