The Secretary of State to the Chargé in China (Atcheson)

797. For Adler from Secretary of the Treasury. Your cables of June 9, TF–128 and June 14, TF–132.

1.
Treasury’s position on the extension of the 1941 Agreement is that if China wishes to renew the 1941 Agreement, the Treasury will be glad to give favorable consideration to a request to this effect. It seems to us that the present form of the Agreement has worked out as satisfactorily as could be expected under existing conditions. However, any question as to whether the Agreement should be renewed or revised is a matter that is naturally of primary interest to the Chinese Government.
2.
You may inform Dr. Kung informally of the Treasury’s views on this point, [Morgenthau.]
