The Ambassador in France (Leahy) to the Secretary of State
[Received April 4—8:27 p.m.]
1054. From Paris. Reference Paris telegram 976 [975?], April 1.9 Axelsson10 found Allen in good spirits and as well cared for as could be expected in a provincial French prison. The food is satisfactory and he is given the exceptional liberty of leaving the prison with a guard from time to time. Allen’s case had not yet been heard but probably will be not later than today. The German authorities at Chalon believe that he will not be given a sentence that will entail more than an additional 10 days or 2 weeks of imprisonment, at the end of which time he will probably be released into the unoccupied zone.
