The Ambassador in China (Johnson) to the Secretary of State
[Received 2:12 p.m.]
620. My 597, December 2, noon. During a conversation yesterday between the Italian Chargé and an officer of the Embassy, the former stated that his Government had no intention of recognizing the Nanking government at present. He added that he had been somewhat worried about this matter due to the difficulty he would encounter in leaving Chungking. From the general trend of his remarks it was gathered that he has received definite word from Rome of its intention not to recognize the new regime.
Sent to the Department, repeated to Peiping, latter mail to Tokyo.
