2402. Your 2785, 17th.47 The attitude of the British Government in the matter is appreciated but it is hoped that their interest will not proceed to the length of guiding the vessel by any naval unit or giving any manifestation of their interest which might be misconstrued by a belligerent that a public vessel of the United States was being convoyed. You may present this matter delicately and informally but definitely to the appropriate authorities.
