The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Spain (Bowers), Then in France

B–449. Your despatch no. 1433 of February 9, 1938,86 Antonio Fernandez and wife. Information received by Vice Consul Fisher from Palma de Mallorca and in letters from Antonio Fernandez to his brother in New York indicate that he has been hospitalized suffering from chronic nervous ailment aggravated by continued imprisonment. In view of assurances of favorable consideration of case given in General Jordana’s letter of February 5, 1938 and the long time which has since elapsed, you are requested again to bring this case informally to the attention of General Jordana and to express the hope that in view of Fernandez’ physical condition it may be possible to permit his release and return to the United States together with his wife.87
