The Chargé in Argentina (Wilson) to the Secretary of State

45. My 43, March 17, noon.31 After repeated efforts I saw Minister of Finance this afternoon. He told me that by April 15 the final figures giving the exports to the United States for November and December will be prepared. On the basis of these statistics he will inform the Embassy whether it will be possible to increase the amount of official [Page 240] exchange available for imports of American merchandise and to widen the present list of commodities entitled to official exchange.

I emphasized the prosperous condition of Argentina and the importance of Argentine-American commerce. The Minister said that the Argentine Government wanted to do its part to improve the friendly atmosphere which should prevail during possible negotiations for a trade agreement.
