435. Following from the Minister at Nanking:
May 30, 9 p.m. Today the Japanese Minister informed several of his colleagues, myself included, that he had received a confidential intimation from a “fairly authoritative source” in the Chinese Government [Page 573] of its intention to declare the abolition next January 1 of all extraterritorial rights. The Belgian Minister said he, too, had received a somewhat less definite intimation from the Minister for Foreign Affairs to the same effect.
