Sir: On May 9, the French Ambassador called to express his Government’s appreciation of your sympathetic attitude with regard to the question of naval armaments, as set forth at the recent session of the Preparatory Commission for the Disarmament Conference. He asked me what steps we would take in the future and, in particular, whether we intended to call a new Conference in this or the following year.

I told him that we had made no definite plans as yet, but desired to bring to fruition, as soon as the opportunity presented by your initiative would warrant, the hope of President Hoover that a reduction in naval armaments might be achieved.
