Peking, August 10, 1901.

(Mr. Rockhill reports that two months after signing of final protocol a tariff of 5 per cent ad valorem effective will be put in force, excepting goods snipped within ten days after signing, and will continue until the commission has effected conversion to specific rates. Free list, which will include flour, will shortly be settled.

The British Government proposes to return to the financial committee at Shanghai, to be disposed of as the powers decide, any balance of its share of the indemnity in excess of its adjusted claim.)
