Lenox, Mass., September 21, 1899.

Thanks for your telegram. The first duty of sheriff was to trace the guilty parties and bring them to justice. Am surprised and deplore that he failed to do his duty. I feel certain that your special agent will not follow his example and that he will discover and denounce the criminals, which is an easy task in such a small locality as Tallulah. Please hasten his departure and kindly wire me when the next grand jury will meet. You know that I ask nothing but that such great crime should not remain also this time unpunished.
