No. 479.
Mr. Morgan to Mr. Evarts.

No. 57.]

Sir: I informed you in my dispatch No. 46 that General Gonzalez had been sent in command of a considerable force for the purpose of putting down a demonstration hostile to the government, which had been made in the States of Zacatecas and Jalisco.

On the 13th instant, the general being at Guanajuato, a popular demonstration was organized in his favor, and about six o’clock in the afternoon a large crowd congregated in front of the house of Mr. Robles Pezuela, where he was stopping.

While the general was on the balcony of the house, a detachment of State troops debouched from a cross street and immediately fired. One man in the crowd was killed, and a young girl who was standing by General Gonzalez’s side was seriously wounded. The general was not hurt.

Immediately the governor of the State disavowed to General Gonzalez the act of his troops.

General Gonzalez’s adversaries pretend that the attempt made upon his life was the result of harsh measures which he had adopted toward the people.
