No. 355.
Mr. Hay to Mr. Drummond.
Washington, September 4, 1880.
Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 26th ultimo, in which you informed the Department of the gracious intention of Her Majesty, on the breaking up of the arctic discovery ship Resolute at Chatham dock-yard, to present to the President a writing-table, made from the timbers of that vessel, in acknowledgment of the restoration of the same in 1856, as a free gift to Her Majesty by the President and people of the United States.
[Page 526]Observing, in reply, that the agreeable contents of your note will be made known to the President on his return from the West, and that the port of New York will be a convenient one at which to receive the gift, I profit by this occasion, sir, to again assure you of my very high consideration.
Acting Secretary.
