No. 79.
Mr. Partridge to Mr. Fish.

No. 258.]

Sir: Since the opening of the regular (and last) session of this legislature, on the 3d of May, their attention has been chiefly occupied with debate on the proposed measure of relief by issuing twelve and a half millions more paper money to be loaned on deposit of national bonds.

Of course the opposition think the only measure of relief is a change of ministry.

The negotiations here with the Argentine Republic have been satisfactorily concluded, and only await approval at Buenos Ayres.

The yellow fever has not yet left Rio, and the Lancaster frigate (sent home) and the flag-ship Brooklyn, as well as the Monongahela, have had some cases.

Mr. Purrington, appointed secretary of this legation, reached here on the 13th of May.

I have, &c.,

JAMES R. PARTRIDGE.
