Mr. Fish to Sir Edward Thornton.

Sir: Referring to our conversation of to-day, in reference to the proposed treaty for reciprocal trade between the United States and the Dominion of Canada, which was submitted to the consideration of the Senate of the United States at the last session of Congress, I have the honor to inform you that the Senate, upon the 3d instant, resolved that it was not deemed expedient to recommend the negotiation of the treaty.
