No. 228.
Mr. Bartholdi to Mr. Fish.
Washington, January 4, 1875. (Received January 6.)
Mr. Secretary of State: A telegraphic dispatch from Duke Decazes informs me that the expulsion of the French Sisters of Charity in Mexico has been ordered by a decree which obliges them to leave on the [Page 476] 31st of January at the latest. They solicit an extension of the time allowed them, that they may be able to take the transatlantic packet which sails in February.
I am instructed, Mr. Secretary of State, to solicit the good offices of the American Cabinet in order to secure this extension of a few days, to which Duke Decazes hopes the Mexican government will have no objection.
Be pleased to accept, &c.,
