Sir: I have to inform you that Isaac F. Redfield, esq., late chief justice of Maine, has been selected to visit England as counsel for the government in the matter of recovering funds and other property of the late rebel organization. He is now here engaged in his preparations and expects to sail in the steamer of the 2d of January. It is desirable that this information shall be confidential until such time as you may think proper after having had an interview with Mr. Redfíeld.
