Mr. Seward to Mr. Adams.
No. 455.]
Department of State, Washington,
January 19, 1863.
Sir: You will learn from the newspapers that General McClernand has attained a very important success in Arkansas. An official despatch from him confirms this information. It is thought that it must result in freeing the west side of the Mississippi from the presence of the insurrectionary forces.
I am, sir, your obedient servant,
WILLIAM H. SEWARD.
