Termination of Mission: Presented recall on May 21, 1858- Commissioned during a recess of the Senate; recommissioned on February 9, 1854, after confirmation. Commissioned to the Kingdom of Hawaii. Gregg’s predecessors, who served as Commissioners to the Sandwich Islands, did not refer to the Mission at Honolulu as a Legation. This term was used by Gregg, however, in his first despatch, dated December 27, 1853.
