Legislation

The Access to Information Act gives the right of access to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada to documents at the Archives, not subject to legal restrictions based on national security, law enforcement, commercial interests and individual privacy. Foreign researchers have the right to request access.

Library and Archives Canada is located in downtown Ottawa: 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

Procedures

Researchers may visit the Library and Archives during opening hours. Visitors must obtain a user card, by showing proper identification, before using its services. Researchers may order up to ten boxes of materials in advance. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses are found on the website.
