We, the undersigned, the merchants, brokers, and others at this port, beg to convey to you our sympathy, indignation, and horror at the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, the President of the United States. We feel that his loss will be deplored not only by the British nation, but throughout the civilized world, and we sincerely trust and believe that the great nation you represent will be able to bear with dignity, and that its future progress will in no way be impeded by, the great and irreparable loss it has sustained.
