The Chargé in Japan (Wilson) to the Secretary of State

217. Following is text of Foreign Office statement issued today:

“The detailed agreement regarding the Shantung railway was signed at Peking on December 5th at 6 p.m., the amount of compensation for the railway being fixed at 40,000,000 yen and the rate of interest at 6 per cent per annum. Under this agreement it has been decided that the transfer of the railway shall begin at noon, January 1st, 1923, to be completed within a month. This latest agreement marks the completion of all the necessary arrangements regarding the restitution of Shantung.”
