Sir: I have the honor to inclose, for the information of the Secretary of State, a report of a commission appointed by the President of Peru to estimate the quantity of guano the property of Peru. It will be perceived by the Secretary that this report has reference to the province of Tarapaca alone. The commission will proceed to estimate the guano deposits in other provinces of Peru, and will add doubtless very much to the quantity which Peru has forsale. The deposits marked on thelist with a red cross are the deposits made by J. T. Landreau. I am often asked if the Government of the United States will urge the claim of J. C. Landreau against Peru on account of these discoveries made by bis brother, J. T. Landreau, and would be pleased to know from the Secretary what response I am to give to these inquiries.
