The undersigned, inhabitants of the town of Selby, desires to give expression to the feelings of horror, regret, and indignation with which they have heard of the assassination of President Lincoln, and of the attempt on the life of Mr. Secretary Seward.

The undersigned wish to convey the assurance of their deep sympathy with the people and government of the United States under the death of one whose character had won the respect and admiration of both friends and enemies, and of their heartfelt condolence with Mrs. Lincoln on the irreparable loss which she has sustained.

They also desire to express their satisfaction at the prospect of a speedy return of peace, to be accompanied by the extinction of negro slavery in America.
