Democratic Classes of Dublin

Resolutions passed at a meeting of the democratic classes of Dublin.

At a meeting of the democratic classes of Dublin, held in the Mechanics’ Institute on Friday evening, the 28th day of April, 1865, it was, by a large and enthusiastic meeting, unanimously resolved:

1.
That the scheme of assassination concocted by a gang of dastardly conspirators, in the name of the southern cause, and partially carried into execution on the evening of the 14th instant by the treacherous murder of Abraham Lincoln, America’s best and greatest President since the days of Washington, excites our horror and indignation, and calls aloud for the execration of mankind.
2.
That, while expressing our abhorrence of the foul deed by which the cause of human liberty has lost one of its purest and best defenders, we confidently cherish the belief that the perpetration of a crime so horrible can have no other effect than to hasten the completion of Lincoln’s glorious work, the restoration of the Union, the extinction of slavery, and the establishment of a solid and durable peace.
