Inhabitants of Congleton

Congleton, May 3, 1865

At a public meeting of the inhabitants of the borough of Congleton, in the county of Chester, held on Wednesday, the 3d day of May, 1865, Benjamin Radley, esq., the mayor of the borough, in the chair, the following resolutions were unanimously passed:

1. That this meeting desires to express its heartfelt sympathy with the government and people of the United States in their present calamity and its abhorrence of the atrocious crimes by which the late President has been deprived of life and the republic has been bereft of a ruler of patriotic integrity and large-hearted beneficence, and by which his principal minister has almost fallen under a dastardly assassin while lying on the bed of sickness; and that it is the earnest desire of the meeting that these cruel and disastrous events may be overruled by Providence for good in drawing together, in stricter accord than ever before, the sympathies and affections of the great Anglo-Saxon race.

1. 2. That this meeting wishes most respectfully to convey to Mrs. Lincoln and her family the deepest sympathy of the inhabitants of this borough in their affliction, which they trust may be in some degree alleviated by the knowledge that it is shared by the princes and peoples of the whole civilized world, and especially by the Queen and people of this kindred nation.
