The Secretary of State to the Minister in Iran ( Dreyfus )

205. Your 250 and 251, August 5.20 The Iranian Minister here has reached an agreement with Joseph P. Sheridan for the latter’s appointment as Food and Supply Adviser to the Iranian Government. Minister has cabled Tehran for approval of the terms agreed upon. Because of the various inoculations required for air travel to the Near East, Sheridan will necessarily be delayed here until early [Page 244] September, but it is hoped he will be able to depart for Tehran immediately after September 7.

In your discretion you may inform the Prime Minister21 that the Department considers Sheridan a very able man and believes that if given full cooperation by the Iranian Government he will be of great assistance in solving the pressing supply problems confronting Iran. During his stay in Washington he will make a study of the situation in so far as information is available here and will investigate the questions involved in obtaining supplies from the United States.
